10 Groundbreaking Startups Shine at the Inaugural Frontier BioHealth Showcase

RICHMOND, VA, November 27, 2024 – The inaugural Frontier BioHealth Showcase, hosted by Activation Capital, brought together 10 high-potential life science startups, regional leaders, and national investors at Main Street Station on November 20, 2024. This debut event marked the culmination of the Frontier BioHealth program, celebrating the transformative innovations and entrepreneurial achievements of the inaugural cohort. The Showcase drew an audience of mentors, investors, and community leaders who gathered to hear five-minute pitches from each startup. The evening began with networking at the Head House before transitioning to the Concourse Room, where the cohort inspired the audience with their ideas and real-world impact.

Frontier BioHealth by Activation Capital is an accelerator program designed to provide highly specialized training, targeted mentorship, and relationship building to help scale pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, and health-focused consumer products companies. High-potential teams receive customized educational programming to aid in navigating product and company scale-up, expert coaching from global thought leaders and serial biomedical entrepreneurs, and access to investors and corporate partners.

The program, funded [in part] through a grant with the U.S. Small Business Administration, showcases the rising momentum in Central Virginia’s life sciences sector. This includes early successes in scaling the advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing cluster and the launch of multiple sector-focused educational and training programs. Frontier BioHealth curates a pipeline of promising companies poised to develop breakthrough solutions in the years ahead while fostering the growth of a vibrant community of innovators.

“The energy in the room at the inaugural Frontier BioHealth Showcase was a direct reflection of the inspiring founders in our first cohort,” said Jim Pannucci, PhD, VP of Entrepreneurship at Activation Capital. “From sustained-release therapeutics to AI-driven diagnostics, these startups are addressing critical healthcare needs with groundbreaking solutions. It was truly inspiring to see the community rally behind their progress and potential.”

The inaugural cohort represents a diverse range of groundbreaking innovations:

  • Atticus Pharma has developed a unique, sustained-release system for delivering therapeutics directly to the skin.
  • GenAssist has created MyoMatrix, a patented biomaterial that regrows muscle lost to disease or traumatic injury.
  • Gisens Biotech’s saliva test allows patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to monitor their health from the comfort of their home and receive personalized and timely care.
  • KeViRx is transforming acute lung injury patient care through the development of novel small molecule drugs.
  • Light Switch Bio is developing an approach for laser-targeted drug delivery to avoid side effects by using lasers to activate drugs only where they’re needed in the body.
  • Oncoustics creates advanced AI solutions for low cost, non-invasive surveillance, diagnostics, and treatment monitoring of diseases with high unmet clinical need.
  • OrthoPreserve’s meniscus replacement implant improves quality of life for people with knee injuries involving the meniscus.
  • Pele Therapeutics is powering the patient in vivo protein therapy revolution to treat devastating and debilitating metabolic and fibrotic diseases with safer, effective, and affordable gene/protein therapy.
  • Rapid Forensic Cell Typing (RFCT) is revolutionizing criminal investigations by providing law enforcement and crime labs with a powerful SaaS platform that enables rapid identification and prioritization of forensic evidence.
  • Vizma Life Sciences’ device enables MRI scanners to directly visualize treatment response in days, rather than months.

“These startups exemplify the transformative potential of life sciences,” said Pannucci. “The Showcase provided an opportunity for these companies to share their stories and connect with leaders who can amplify their impact. The work they’re doing is pushing boundaries and redefining the future of healthcare.”

As a hybrid program running from August to November 2024, Frontier BioHealth offered fully funded travel opportunities to the Richmond area and resources to accelerate commercialization. The success of the inaugural cohort underscores the growing momentum in Central Virginia’s life sciences sector and Activation Capital’s role in building a robust innovation ecosystem.

“We are proud to have supported these founders in bringing their innovations to life,” added Pannucci. “This is just the beginning of their journeys, and we are excited to see their continued growth as they engage with investors, partners, and the broader healthcare ecosystem.”

The Frontier BioHealth Showcase demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and community. To learn more about the program, apply for future cohorts, or explore mentorship opportunities, visit frontierbiohealth.com.
